But, unless you attended last year’s CIP event, chances are there’s something about me that you really don’t know. It’s something that I’m still pretty protective of because, until last year’s event, I’d actually (and literally) put in a box in the closet, buried, resting in peace. Because I *thought* that part of me and my life was stick-a-fork-in-me, all DONE.
Silly me.
You see, I am a classically trained Shakespearean actress. In a former life, I studied, trained and performed all over the country. I’ve even been in a movie with Timothy Hutton – but I’ll tell you more about THAT later.
Whether on stage, on screen or online, what people pay attention to are bravura performances built on PRESENCE.
Because this concept called ‘presence’ is such an ingrained part of me, and because revealing its power had such an impact on the attendees of CIP 2010, I feel remiss in not insisting you hear about this until now.
What I can tell you from personal experience as a real-deal working actress, and from watching the “before-your-eyes” transformation of those individuals I’ve worked with, riveting performances are not about creating something false or putting on layers to cover up.
Even online, when everyone’s head turns on ‘Launch Day’ for something new, that’s because we all sense a bravura performance worth watching.
Now let me be 100% clear about what I mean by ‘performance.’ The performances that take your breath away are created by actors who have stripped away everything but who they truly are. The stance a business owner takes, when they are certain of their value, is the same. It’s definitely NOT about masks or fakery.
These magnetic – naked – moments make audiences nod their heads, laugh and fall a little in love. They are also what make us want to buy.

It requires eye-popping amounts of courage and skill to stand up, pretty much naked, and speak the truth in front of God and everybody. If you’re lucky, and I hope you are, you’ve had moments where you just cannot NOT say what you’re here to say. I bless those moments.
Those are the moments when we’re at our most essential, and of most value to our fellow people.

As our conversation here winds to a close, I feel compelled to share my favorite scene from the movie Walk the Line. Johnny Cash has just played a tried and true song for his hard-won audition in front of Sam Phillips, head of Sun Records. Sam stops him and says:

Our life work, as I think of it, together as part of the Escaping-Mediocrity Tribe, is to answer this most important and fascinating question. Take a moment now and look around.
